Tessa is a tormented character who has gone through so much. Suspicion, betrayal, guilt, accusations, things not always being what they seem, and a whole lot of pain, are all craftily inserted at the appropriate times in the book to make it a suspenseful story where you have to keep turning the pages to see what comes next. The story is a prime example of a well-written psychological contemporary thriller with all the relevant ingredients present. She’s kidnapped yet another child just because she couldn’t think straight after having lost the first two. As the police arrive to take Harry from her apartment, there is a suspicion in the air that she’s done it again. Tessa is in a rather precarious situation, as not long ago, she has been accused of abducting a small child. The little guy, Harry, reminds her of someone else. As the questions are bombarding her mind one after another, there is something nagging at the back of Tessa’s mind. Tessa, who has lost not one but two children in recent years, is standing dumbstruck in front of the boy, not knowing what to make of him and the whole eerie situation. When Tessa Markham arrives home, she finds a little boy in her kitchen asking her if she is his mom. The Secret Mother by Shalini Boland is a standalone psychological thriller that keeps you up reading until you finish the last page.

When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days lost at sea. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The son of a zookeeper, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior, a fervent love of stories, and practices not only his native Hinduism, but also Christianity and Islam. Winner of the 2002 Man Booker Prize for Fiction Pi Patel is an unusual boy. I put some paper and pens on the table, and asked everyone to come up with anagrams and nicknames that could subsequently be used for the characters in the books. So that evening, I put up a board with all the main players on it, and a summary of their key attributes. I also knew that I wanted certain other characters from the myths to feature. I already knew that my sisters – all of them 21st century women – would be named after the mythological sisters of old, but there were some issues with the unfamiliar spellings and pronunciations for a modern-day audience. Soon after I’d had the inspiration to write a series of books based on the Seven Sisters star cluster, I sat down one night with my family. Many of the characters in the books are linked to the Seven Sisters story as told in Greek mythology, via their names, their physical attributes, their roles in the plot and their personalities. While it’s not necessary to have any knowledge of the stars or the myths to enjoy the books, there are plenty of hidden references to them if you’re interested and you know where to look. ‘The Seven Sisters’ series is loosely based on the ancient stories and myths surrounding the Seven Sisters of the famous Pleiades star cluster. Most of Clive Barker’s works deals with the concept of reality and blurs the line between fantastical world and the real one. His renowned fantasy series, The Books of Abarat, is targeted at the young adults. The Great and Secret Show (1989) is another dark fantasy and marked as the first book in The Art Trilogy. In fact, it was nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. It is classified as a dark fantasy presenting the concept of parallel worlds. Subsequently, he touched upon horror fiction combined with urban fantasy in the novel Weaveworld (1987). The book narrates a Faustian tale that has certain scandalous themes at its center as such cannibalism, self-mutilation and incest. In 1985, he published his first horror novel, The Damnation Game. For instance, “Rawhead Rex”, “The Forbidden” and “The Midnight Meat Train” are famously transformed into movies.Īdditionally, Barker has written novels early in his writing career. Moreover, multiple stories from Books of Blood have been adapted for films and television series. Also, it can even border on comic horror and tragic horror.
