At the ball, a choosing ceremony takes place, where men choose their wives. King Manford is holding a ball to celebrate 200 years since Cinderella met Prince Charming. ![]() However, by including it near the beginning Bayron raises suspision that all may not be what is seems with the story. ![]() This text is very similar to the Cinderella story we all know. Bayron uses excerpts from the palace appoved text. It is now a legal requirement that every girl knows the Cinderella story off by heart (well the palace approved version). I ended up reading it in a day, I simply couldn’t (and didn’t want to) put it down! I’ll never look at classic Cinderella in the same way again.Ĭinderella is Dead is set 200 years after Cinderella finds her prince at the ball in the kingdom of Mersailles. So a book which retold that story drew me in instantly. I grew up obsessed with Disney and Cinderella was one of the first films I watched. I picked up Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron as a holiday read. ![]() ![]() He then went to Washington, D.C., where he practiced trial and corporate law for nine years. ![]() He then graduated from the University of Virginia with a law degree. ![]() “Well, at least I’ve got that going for me,” Kit said. “Sarcasm helps, believe it or not,” he said. Something went drastically wrong, we are given to understand, our only clues meted out in flashbacks to therapy sessions where Kit recalls her struggle to recover from an unnamed but repeated trauma. ![]() ![]() The evolution of this relationship is revealed in a so-called Marriage Story - an autobiography-within-a-book - that Kit, the present-day, now-divorced protagonist, divulges in bite-sized pieces throughout the story. The story, which shifts across multiple timelines, begins with the description of a young couple’s “meet cute,” their off-kilter courtship and eventual, disquieting road to the altar, despite the ambivalence shared by Kit, the bride-to-be, and the reader. One of the most popular iterations of this theme is the one about the curmudgeon’s cold heart slowly being thawed by a lonely child, and it is this version that lies at the center of Summer Hours at the Robbers Library. ![]() Do people come into our lives for a reason? Are they sent to us by some benevolent force - perhaps the universe itself - to help us heal each other in times of need and to create intentional families when our “real” families fall short? It’s a comforting notion, and certainly one that has inspired countless authors of fiction, film, and even animation. ![]() ![]() At its core it’s about an abused boy who gets turned into a misshapen “hulk” as part of a “super-soldier” experiment. Well, it isn’t easy to describe in a straightforward way. There’s a section of the book that feels very much like a Hulk story, in fact. ![]() I do know it’s been in the works for more than three decades and apparently started out as a Hulk story. I don’t know the full story behind this book but it will be revealed this summer in the next issue of Comic Book Creator. Sound effects, foreign languages, special fonts, and some of the most creative usage of word balloons I have ever encountered all serve to remind the reader that this is a master at work. No, what we have on view here is nothing less than a first-class master storyteller at his peak, telling a novel-length story in a novel’s length, slowly and deliberately paced with stunningly beautiful black and white line art every step of the way. In Monsters, the long-awaited new BWS graphic novel from Fantagraphics, we see no massive style transition of that type. I recently had an article in Back Issue where I wrote about how much fun it had been to watch young English artist Barry Windsor-Smith progress so quickly from his Steranko/Kirby-influenced Daredevil and X-Men to the lush neo-classical style he used for his ultimate Conan story, “Red Nails.” ![]() Written and Illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith ![]() ![]() ![]() I was reminded (not always happily) of Ferngully, Avatar, and My Side of the Mountain.
